Palacio Provincial: A Luxurious Stay in Old San Juan

Cool Boutique Hotel in the heart of Old San Juan

During our latest trip to San Juan, we were excited to stay at the Palacio Provincial in the middle of Old San Juan.  It looked like the perfect location covering Old San Juan on foot with decent access to all the places we planned to visit including one of our favorite restaurants Marmalade, one of our favorite bars, Scryer Rum Barrelhouse.

Impressions

A couple items that immediately endeared the property to me. One. Their WiFi.  I got there before check-in and I was able to access the internet before our room was ready.  It also worked on all floors and locations of the hotel. Two. Bottles of Water.  They were plentiful.  They always had cold bottles available at the front desk, at the rooftop bar, and in our hotel mini fridge.  With the heat of San Juan, it was very nice to stay at a Hilton that wasn’t skimpy on the waters.

The Room

Once we got checked in, we found the room delightfully cold with dark blackout curtains.  Temperature and darkness are always important in case you want to slip in the essential vacation nap. The room was well laid out with a coffee station, mini-fridge, closet with robe and slippers, a small dresser / desk combo, a king sized bed with two side tables. The ceilings were high with a multi-speed ceiling fan. There was also a statue of a rooster in a cage (a theme on the property).

The bathroom was simple but clean with a single sink, shower, and toilet. There were plenty of towels.  The Palacio Provincial has implemented the larger toiletry containers and were quick to replenish when we were running low.

The Hotel

Most of the hotel is open air and well designed for airflow. On the lower level, there is a lobby, an outdoor courtyard, and a restaurant (the Consular Restaurant and Bar) that were all open air.  There was a small business room, library lounge space, and conference room that were all air conditioned.

The bathroom

The rooftop has a small fitness center, a bar (Atelier Rooftop Terrace) , a small infinity pool and hot tub, plus chairs and loungers with umbrellas for shade. The hotel abuts the Catedral Basílica de San Juan Bautista, providing an older architecture vibe to the hotel.

The pool and hot tub

The only minor disappointment was they had just upgraded their point of sale system and there was no way to do a room charge, requiring us to carry our wallets to attend on property venues like the rooftop bar and brunch at the Consular.

Location

The location was perfect.  From excellent places to eat within walking distance (and yes, we went to Marmalade again!) to the historical sites such as the Castillo San Felipe del Morro, the Bastion of San Sebastian, Old San Juan has plenty to do. We also captured some different photo opportunities along the way.  We only used ride share to travel to and from the airport. From morning coffees at Cuatro Sombras (excellent iced coffee options), to cocktails at La Factoría, San Juan is always delightful.

Summary

We enjoyed our stay at the Palacio Provincial in Old San Juan, enjoying its central location and convenient access to various attractions. The hotel impressed us with reliable WiFi and ample supply of cold water. The well-appointed room provided a comfortable retreat with essential amenities. The open-air design and facilities like rooftop bar, small pool, and hot tub added to the charm. Overall, the location was perfect for exploring the historical sights and enjoying the local dining scene, making our stay in San Juan delightful.
