Scryer Rum & Barrelhouse – a Yummy Taste of Old San Juan with Artisan Rum

While there are a million “best bars in Old San Juan” lists, we found Scryer Rum and Barrelhouse has a nice local feel with great craft cocktails. We sat at the bar with rum casks aging their locally made rum behind us and watched the bartender work his magic. This bar is well located in Old Town very close to our hotel the Palacio Provincial and near our favorite restaurant in Old San Juan, the Marmalade. The bar is large with four floors with plenty of seating throughout. We often do walking, food, or cocktail tours in new cities. This little gem is something we will come back to again and again.

From their “Barrelhouse Classics” list, we selected “Claude and Sherry.” The Claude and Sherry is their version of the Rum Old Fashioned. It features their double-matured rum, sherry wine, Angostura bitters in a smoked glass. Of course, you can get it smoked.

From their “Love in the Tropics” list, we selected “La Colada.” We found their La Colada to be a great riff on a Pain Killer though they cite the pina colada as the inspiration in the description. Expertly crafted and well-made and balanced. The basil makes it unique and provides the green hue to the cocktail.

Mocktails. They had three different mocktails as well, a twist of the dark and stormy, the La Colada (virgin), and an espresso based drink with ginger beer and a bit of honey. Yum!

We did go back and purchase a bottle of their Scryer rum to bring home with us. It’s the best kind of souvenir – fully consumable!

Their menu also offered other options. They have two different flights – one spirit focused while the other offers port and sherry wines.  Those barrels are used in the production of their Rum.  They also offer six brands of cigars.

Cigars are available for purchase and smoking on the rooftop.

Upstairs, as well as additional seating, there is a rooftop oasis with lots of plants, seating, and open air for cigars.

Upstairs at Scryer is a hidden oasis.

Scryer rum will certainly be a place we return to in future trips to San Juan and we are looking forward to tapping the bottle we brought home. It will remind us of Puerto Rico every time we partake from our bottle.
