Looking for an off the beaten path Franschhoek restaurant and wine experience with breathtaking views? Hari Kitchen is the place to be! Exploring different wineries across South Africa was an amazing experience and we loved finding hidden, family-owned restaurants along the way. We learned about the Hari Kitchen from a New York Times article, and we stopped in to experience their “Surprise 4 Course – Sommelier-Chef’s Food and Wine Pairing Experience” and had an amazing, made to order, dining experience. Hari is a clay pot used in cooking traditional African cuisine and we were excited to try their approach to afro fusion cooking.

We enjoyed multiple wonderful experiences during our time in Cape Town including our trip to see the penguins at Boulders Beach, the beautiful scenery at the Cape of Good Hope, and the cool speakeasy Art of Duplicity. But one of the highlights was the Hari Kitchen. An hour drive or so from the Table Bay Hotel, we were welcomed by the owner, head chef, and sommelier Munashe Kwaramba who customized our experience by taking our likes/dislikes and allergies very seriously and tailoring the menu to fit. Some members of our party do not eat fish or seafood, and one has severe allergies to multiple ingredients (such as gluten, dairy, garlic, etc.) and he was able to balance all these complications to produce an excellent afro fusion luncheon from scratch for our reservation. In fact, he was the only restaurant we reached out to in advance that was enthusiastic to cater to our party’s allergy needs.

For a starter, we had a pumpkin and peanut butter soup that was absolutely amazing despite the odd combination, and is known as a South African favorite! The next dish was a fabulous plate of oysters with a red wine vinaigrette for the seafood eaters and a mushroom cuisine including sautéed corn and tomatoes with a sweet lime sauce (allergy/non seafood eaters). The main course was pork belly over mashed potatoes, steamed carrots, and a combo of three sweet homemade sauces. There was a wine pairing with each meal as well, adding fun to this little adventure.

The staff and service were absolutely amazing and made sure our glasses (and bellies) were always full! We definitely recommend going to Hari Kitchen while in South Africa, as it has excellent food, service, and beautiful scenic views away from the city center, giving a rustic vibe along the South African wineries.
