Wallow Lodge: Luxury Safari Experience in Zimbabwe During Baby Season

Overview

We visited the Wallow Lodge near Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe during the rainy season but, while it may be rainy, it was also baby season and we got to see many fabulous animal babies during our time at the Wallow Lodge. This was our second of three planned safaris during our five-country tour of Africa. We had just come from the wonderful Lion Sands Lodge and after this we would go on a Chobe River cruise safari. The Wallow Lodge is a luxury lodge amidst the wild so we were cautioned to be on guard at all times as the wild animals could wander freely on the property, and we were not disappointed!  We never felt unsafe, but we did see a mama and her baby warthogs crossing the raised platforms that we used to traverse the property. We obviously steered clear as to not anger mama!

Accommodations

Once we arrived, we got settled into our wonderfully air conditioned and netted rooms. They had a little tea station and an indoor / outdoor shower. There were plenty of outlets for our various electronics and we were able to settle in quickly.

Safari

Our first evening, we went for an evening game drive and got to explore the lush area and see the local animals including Impalas, Warthogs, Greater Kudus, Helmeted Guineafowl, and African Buffalo. At the end of the drive, the driver set up a little bar and we enjoyed drinks and snacks with a gorgeous view.

Food

The Wallow Lodge was very accommodating. We went out for our private day tour at Victoria Falls where we had a scheduled meal at a local restaurant and that wasn’t working well with our family as we just needed a little down time.  They were able to pull together a delightful meal with our family (and adjusted for our food allergies) and some critical rest time, as we had been on the go since we landed in Africa.

Zambezi River Cruise

After resting up, we took a river cruise which was included in our rate and were able to see a few local animals. It rained (which is the season) and we enjoyed the rain as well as dinner and drinks as we looked for the wildlife. It was also a lovely change of pace.

Rehabilitation Center

On our final day, we asked to visit their rehabilitation area and learn about their eco-social mission and how they have helped their local community interact better with wild animals.  From self-made protection equipment, to stoves to minimize the damage to the local ecosystem, Wallow Lodge is plugged into their local community and, while the reality may be hard to hear, learning about their efforts in Zimbabwe was very worthwhile. If you looking for a great place for your Victoria Falls excursions, we recommend the Wallow Lodge!
